Reread after watching the series, read the first time in high school. Strange what parts stayed with my from fifteen and which parts I felt like I was reading for the first time.
Sometimes you need a book to get you back into the swing of finishing books. After tearing thru The Handmaid's Tale I had a lot of false starts. Must have picked up and put down five different books in November. Then on my way home from LA I saw Commonwealth at the airport and even though I had three unread books in my suitcase already I decided this was what I wanted to keep me occupied on the plane home. Read the whole way and finished the last few pages the next morning. Like Bel Canto, Commonwealth is as comforting as a cup of tea and the perfect book to get me out of my start and stop reading funk.
Many of my most trusted friends love this book. It was given to me two years ago at a meeting by an executive. After we bonding over a shared love of reading she took me to the "in development" shelf and let me pick whatever I wanted to take home. I finally plucked this one off my to read shelf in early December and while there were moments of literary transcendence, I am not sure I am as in the same level of fan as Julie and Chiara.
I raced to Skylight Books in LA to buy this and then apart from the first (outstanding) story saved the rest to read later. Maybe it's because of the intensity of the tales or maybe it's because my mind was in other places in California and I wanted to give these stories my full attention. Read the bulk of them back home in Brooklyn on New Year's Eve before going out. But I'm sure I will revisit many of them again.
