Friday night I went to go see Cute Activist at the Bushwick Starr with Rachel. We tried to eat at Bunna Cafe afterwards but everyone else in Brooklyn had the exact same idea so we ended up going to my and Adam's favorite restaurant Myrtle Diner instead. Rachel had never been and it's always fun to see people's reactions to MD for the first time since it really is one of the best kept secrets in Brooklyn. The MD menu is pretty ED friendly except for sneaky soy but since we go there once a week I wasn't about to ask for a run down of ingredients to every dish and instead decided to just wing it. We ate black cod, cucumber salad, sautéed spinach + shiitake mushrooms, and pappardelle cut zucchini with fish eggs. They brought out grapes and strawberries drizzled in plum sake for dessert and I figured a drizzle couldn't hurt the cleanse so ate them all. Everything was, as per usual, incredible.
Saturday was heavy cooking at home. Adam and I ate oatmeal in the morning then after we each got haircuts I made a brussel sprouts with white beans, slivered almonds and chicken sausage. And before we went out for a friend's birthday at night I made a ED version of my grandfather's famous pasta fagioli with lentil pasta and turkey bacon.
Sunday was yet another brunch to navigate and since a Naturopath told me I had to add beef back to the ED for iron, I ordered steak and eggs minus the eggs at Pure Bistro in Park Slope. The rest of the day was leftovers and sadly ogling the tacos at Austin and Shell's going away party at Doris.
My sweet tooth hit me hard this weekend. Perhaps it's because on Saturday we went to a birthday party and I couldn't dance with my true love, the cake. Feeling cake loss I endeavored to make ED cookies and after trying a three ingredient recipe (coconut oil, coconut flour, honey) I made what Adam declared the blandest cookie that has ever existed. He was right. Not to be defeated. I tried again this time adding dates, lemon juice, lemon zest and swapping the honey for maple syrup. And these ones were actually good! Maybe not as good as Back to Nature California Lemon Cookies - but pretty close! Recipe here -
4 tbsp coconut oil
4 tbsp coconut flour
6 pitted dates
.25 c slivered almonds
zest of one small lemon
juice of one small lemon
1 tbsp maple syrup
Pre-heat oven to 350. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and pulse into well combined. Make dough into little balls then flatten them on a parchment lined baking sheet (dough will be sticky). Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the bottoms are brown. Cool on a wire rack. Enjoy!
