When I was in Toronto last month, Ian's wife Maile told me she was seeing Franzen speak that night. I said that I'd just finished Purity. "Really?" she said looking totally surprised that I would have so quickly read the new Franzen, yet haven't started the Ferante books. And she wasn't wrong, it was totally out of character for me. It came about only because Kara told me she couldn't put it down. And I liked it. I didn't love it the way I anticipate I will the Ferante when I get around to starting those, which I honestly haven't yet because I just know they will take over my life and do I have the time for that right now?
Also, read Fates and Furies - another quick read that I enjoyed but any book that has a playwright living in a five bedroom Hamptons house with a pool who doesn't also write for TV and Film seems a little suspect.
Lit reminded me of a someone I am no longer friends with in a way that made me miss her and also feel weird. It also made me want to go back to church and spend a afternoon researching what the most liberal of the Catholic Churches in my new neighborhood is.
Kitchens of the Great Midwest I read because someone asked me to for work reasons. I liked it, it made me want to make peanut butter bars and apple sauce. I made the latter.
