art of the DP

We had our first official dinner party in the new apartment this weekend! Usually with a DP, I like to plan the menu days (if not weeks) in advance, invite as many people as can possibly fit around whatever table we happen to be using and really emphasize the "party" in the title of the event. This time, however, I was smack in the middle of two career crises and so at 5pm I'd given Adam the reigns to the evening and still didn't even know what we were going to eat, the crazy part, I didn't care. With the insane day I was living, the controlling matriarch in me took a needed backseat and let Adam drive. I was also content with the idea of just two (2!) of our friends coming over. The smaller group felt more relaxing and comfortable. Because I am such a glutton for company, this attitude was in total contrast to my usual, "pack em in!" mentality.

The whole night, I didn't lift a GD finger except to open a bottle of wine that I sat on the couch drinking while Adam unpacked the groceries that he bought, cut up the veg and roasted the shiz out of a Marlow and Daughter's chicken. Austin and Shell came over with Magnolia cupcakes and I realized how incredible a dinner party with just two close friends can be. Since no one was meeting for the first time (and perhaps because I was in such a delicate state of sanity) the conversation was deeper and more meaningful than often is allowed when you play "friendmatchmaker" around the table.

I am not saying my days of filling up the apartment are behind me (and certainly not on holidays!) But the casual Friday night gathering is wonderful, funny, and restful - there could not have been a better antidote to the monster of a day I was having just prior.
