Whenever my father comes to visit he always comments either to me or to my friends that Jean Rhys has the most room on my bookshelf. After writing a paper on WIDE SARGASSO SEA my senior year of college, I requested her unfinished autobiography, SMILE PLEASE for Christmas (2006) and by February had read that and everything else in her collection. I haven't revisited her work since then but whenever I go into a bookstore the first thing I check is whether they have her books, all of which I already own.
