bedside table

I bought Lydia Davis's THE END OF THE STORY at Book Court in Cobble Hill after babysitting when I had some time to kill on my way uptown to see the now closed, BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS on Broadway. When I placed the book to the counter the clerk asked me if I'd read any Lydia Davis before. I answered that I hadn't and he said, "She's known for her short stories." "I know." I replied. He stared at me and held the book sideways,  "This is a novel." He said as if I might not want it now. "I know, I want the novel." He rang me up.
