watercolor class
Thirteen years ago, during my final semester of high school, I took a painting class and I loved it. After that class, I painted for myself often. Especially the year I lived in Prague, I painted all the time. So much so, that a girl from my dorm, when making all of our friends South Park avatars (this was 2005) gave mine a beret and a paint palette. Sometime over the course of becoming an adult, this habit has fallen off. I still have my paints, but I never use them.
My current writer's space is the back of a shared art studio and gallery. Walking through all of these artist's work spaces before I get to my little desk cubby makes me 1) feel like I am back in college and 2) miss doing something visually creative. So when Adam recently signed up for a ceramics class, something he has been talking about doing for years and finally decided to go for, I took his lead and signed up for a watercolor class in the same studio as my writer's space. On the first day, we went around and said what we did for a living and almost every person there works in some kind of digital creative field and is craving something hands on and tangible to balance it out.
I recently finished my five week class at the trestle gallery. My instructor, Alison Malletz was wonderful. The photo at the top is the orange I painted week two. Jury's out if I'll be watercoloring the days away but it's nice to have a more creative hobby than pinning to pass time on the weekends when I want to stay home and do nothing.
