| Easter 2016 on Myrtle Ave. |
Easter has become my holiday. Growing up, Palm Sunday was just as big of a holiday in my family as Easter was. My father's family still has a big Palm Sunday dinner and my mom still occasionally hosts some of our relatives on Easter Sunday too. But, unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas, where Adam and I switch on and off every year whether we will be traveling to Rochester or Baltimore, neither of our parents expect us home to celebrate this one. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they'd love to have us, but it's not a requirement. And so - Easter has become my New York holiday. I've been hosting it in my apartment since Adam and I moved in together and before that, when my sister lived here, she had it at hers. In fact, be it at my apartment, Amelia's, or that one year my mom lived on Bedford Ave, I can't remember the last time I wasn't in Brooklyn for Easter. If you read this blog you know me and that means you know I love traditions and this has become one of my favs. We never have exactly the same group of people from year to year but the menu rarely changes. As far as food goes, Easter means pig. I prefer pork loin to the traditional spiral ham so I've been making some riff on the below for years -
(it's a great food for guests as there's little hands on time)
roasted carrots
(easiest side ever: peel and cut into slices, toss with olive oil, salt & pepper and roast at 400 til they're starting to burn)
a green salad
(this year: butter lettuce, scallions, cucumbers, kalamata olives, pepitas, olive oil & balsamic)
some sort of grain
mac n cheese
(I used Gwyneth's recipe this year but it wasn't as good as usual. Next year maybe I will switch up the recipe or ask someone else to bring it.)
Desserts are where I switch it up each year. Last year we had
rice pudding two ways and this year it was a Blueberry Lavender galette and Raisin Walnut Chocolate Bread Pudding.
And of course, we always start with a cheese plate---
