summer reads

Between LA and Upstate and Nicaragua and Toronto and Brooklyn - you would think I'd have had more time to read on planes and that this list would be longer. But I usually fall asleep on planes. So, these are the books I managed to get in on docks, beaches, subways and beds -- as you can see, it's quite Mitford heavy. That's thanks almost entirely to Chiara Atik.

I bought this on Amazon before leaving for LA. and picked it up when I finally gave in to the fact that I was never going to finish A Live Coal in the Sea. Debo is charming and funny, but this was not as much of a romp as Decca and Nancy's books.

Threw some Atwood into my Mitford binge. I love Margaret Atwood's sci-fi. I find that her older, more naturalistic books (like this one and Surfacing) are just as creepy and unsettling as the pigoons of Oryx and Crake.

I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder against Nancy because she is portrayed as quite mean and ruthless in The Sisters. Going to have to rethink disliking her because, my god, these books are funny.

But Decca is still my one true love of the family. Maybe it's because I am such a Lessing fanatic, that I seem to have thing for the Reds. Perhaps, it's because she moved to America. Or that, like me, she has a nickname that is not an easy jump from her given name. Or simply that her  self-awareness, humor and the fact that she is one of the few Mitfords on the right side of history makes her the only logical choice for favorite sister. Whatever the reason, I can't wait to go deeper with Decca.
