I gave Alex Beth a copy of The Sorrows of an American for her birthday. We were having lunch with her family at Ippudo on 4th Ave. In the inscription I told her that this was the only one of Siri Hustvedt's books I had yet to read and if she wanted we could start a little book club. Three days later I received the following text message - "Finished book, loved it!! Best bday gift!! how are you?" I was so happy Alex liked the book - when you give a book as a gift - you always hope the person actually reads it. I bought my own copy the day I received her text and finished it yesterday on the G train shuttle.

I must say the above photo is perfect! No one will recognize you as the tow headed child!
